Exfoliation
As we age, our skin cells turn over at a much slower rate, which makes it important to aid in cell turnover through exfoliation.
Exfoliation helps maintain skin and is extremely effective for treating fine lines and wrinkles, breakouts, blackheads and hyperpigmentation. It can be achieved through mechanical and/or chemical means and involves the removal of the oldest dead skin cells on the skin's outermost surface.
Physical exfoliation involves the use of a product (facial scrub, Clarisonic facial brush, or microdermabrasion) to manually remove the top layer of skin cells, causing new skin cells to rise to the surface.
Chemical Exfoliation (hydroxy acids or retinol) can be milder, in the form of in-home care, or more aggressive, when achieved by prescription or through chemical peels. Chemical exfoliation causes skin cells to prematurely slough off.
