Many factors can influence skin aging, including gravity, changes in weight, and sun exposure. As a result of skin aging we begin to develop wrinkles and folds, however, we can fight this aging process by using cosmetic facial fillers.
These injectable facial fillers"fill in" wrinkles and folds, and reveal a younger you. Some of the best facial fillers include Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane and Radiesse. And many new facial fillers are pending FDA review.
Though most commonly injected into the smile lines (nasolabial folds), cosmetic facial fillers can also be used to benefit other locations, including lips, cheeks, hands, and even ear lobes. Not only do these agents help reduce wrinkles and folds, they can also improve the appearance of scars.
After a consultation, Dr. Matthys, our onside dermatologist in our Riverside, MO, office will inject the facial filler into the desired location. Topical anesthesia may be used, depending on the location and patient preference; anesthesia will also be in the filler to decrease pain during injection.
After injecting the facial filler, the patient may have some swelling, but downtime is minimal, and the patient can return to work (or leisure) immediately. Ice is recommended for the first 24-48 hours to help decrease swelling, and patients are encouraged to avoid massaging the treated area to avoid accidently relocating the product to an undesired location. These cosmetic facial fillers usually last from between 6 to 18 months, depending upon where they were injected, and on touch ups.
