Skin Conditions

Having healthy skin is as important as having any healthy body part. In fact, your skin is your body's largest organ, and for it to perform its functions properly, your skin needs proper care. Sunflower Dermatology & Medical Day Spa specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of skin conditions for adult and pediatric patients, as well as skin disease, hair disease and nail disease.

Some of the skin conditions we treat include:

Anti-Aging
Approximately 90% of all changes in skin are due to prolonged exposure to sunlight. Ultraviolet light not only damages the DNA in the cells of the skin, but also inhibits the repair mechanisms that repair damaged skin cells. The breakdown of DNA, collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid, and other molecules in the skin, all contribute to aging. The logical, and most important, solution is sun protection. There are also anti-aging products designed to repair damage that has already been done by the sun. At-home skin care suitable for your skin type, properly moisturizing, and exfoliation, are crucial.

It is important to begin using anti-aging products as early as your 20s to prevent damage, and to repair damage that has already been done. It is never too late to use anti-aging products, and there are many products and treatments that can visibly improve aging in the skin and make you look years younger, no matter what age you are right now.

Combination Skin
Combination Skin is often considered the toughest skin type to conquer because of the potential need to address two opposing ends of the skin care spectrum. The majority of people with combination skin have a T-zone that is oily, and cheeks that are dry. Many people deal with occasional breakouts and larger than normal pores, especially on the nose.
If you find that certain areas of your skin are dry, yet others are on the oily side, you probably fall into the combination skin type category.

Dry Skin
When you have dry skin you may notice your skin is usually tight and possibly even flakey, and your pores are almost unnoticeable. After you wash your skin, you can even feel that your skin needs moisture almost immediately. Dry skin is usually caused by too little of oil production in the lower levels of the skin; and not enough moisture in the upper levels of the skin. Dry skin ages faster than oily skin, so it is important to keep your skin's moisture level in tact.

Hyperpigmentation
Hyperpigmentation is caused by sun damage, inflammation, or skin injuries, and is often related to acne. People with darker skin types are more prone to hyperpigmentation than those with lighter skin, especially when there is excessive exposure to the sun. Many forms of hyperpigmentation are caused by an overproduction of melanin. UV light stimulates melanocyte activity, thus contributing to the reason why sun damage is the most common cause of hyperpigmentation in the skin.

There are home care options for hyperpigmentation, such as retinol, hydroxy acids, or hydroquinone, which is a bleaching agent for the skin. There are also in-office procedures, including microdermabrasion, chemical peels and Fraxel® re:store laser treatment.

Oily Skin
One of the most noticeable characteristics of oily skin is the size of pores, which tend to be larger and more noticeable. Having oily skin does not necessarily mean you will have acne. You could very well have oily skin without having acne. The reasons for an oily skin type are varied. Some of the more prominent reasons are hormonal fluctuations, humidity, or poor skincare.

Sensitive Skin
If you notice stinging, burning, itching, or redness while using certain products, or ingredients, you could have sensitive skin. Fair skin types, with lighter hair and eyes, tend to be more prone to sensitivity than darker skin types. Skin that is easily flushed may also suggest sensitive skin.

People often misdiagnose themselves as having sensitive skin, when, in reality, they are simply using the wrong products for their skin type.
