What Causes a Double Chin?

Do you feel self-conscious about your double chin? You are not alone. According to a 2015 survey by the American Society Dermatologic Surgery as many as 67 percent of their patients are dissatisfied with the appearance of their double chins. Submental fullness, the clinical term for double chin, can be a result of weight, age, or genetics, and is often resistant to elimination to diet and exercise alone.

What is Kybella?

Kybella ™ is an FDA-approved non-surgical treatment for moderate to severe submental fullness, also known as double chin. Kybella is comprised of deoxycholic acid, a non-human, non-animal synthetic molecule of your body’s naturally produced bio-acid that aids in the break down and absorption of dietary fat.

How Does Kybella Work?

Kybella is injected into the sub-cutaneous fat layer under the chin fat deposits, it then initiates destruction of the fat cell membranes. This causes a local tissue response, where the body’s macrophage cells initiate a process called phagocytosis, the break down and elimination of destroyed fat cell debris. Fibroblast cells also respond to promote swift healing to injection area beneath the chin. The fat that is cleared from the treatment area is metabolically processed for energy or redistributed to other fat store deposits in the patient’s body. The transfer of these fat stores should show negligible visible results. Following the procedure, Kybella is metabolized and removed naturally through the gastrointestinal tract with no ill results. The local tissue response at the injection site lasts about 28 days. After which patients should set up a follow up appointment to evaluate how their treatment is progressing. Once the aesthetic response is achieved, retreatment with Kybella is not expected.

How Much Downtime is Required for a Kybella Treatment?

Treatments in the Epiphany Dermatology can take as little as 20 minutes and most patients experience visible results in 2-4 treatments. Kybella injections are considered a no-downtime procedure. Patients may experience redness and swelling following the procedure, but this usually self resolves quickly and patients may resume with daily life with little to no restrictions.
