The Science Behind IPL Hair Removal Treatments
We use Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology for hair reduction treatments. We have a cynosure device with is FDA approved for permanent hair reduction. The device creates light energy which is then absorbed into the targeting the melanin (dark pigment) of the hair to ultimately cause damage to the hair follicle. This light travels through the skin until it strikes the hair shafts or the bulb (root). The bulb is usually where the highest concentration of melanin is located. As the light is absorbed, the bulb and most of the hair shaft are heated, destroying the hair-producing papilla. Hair growth is safely reduced without damaging the surrounding tissue.
How Many Treatments of IPL Hair Removal Does it Take to See Results?
We recommend a series of 6 treatments usually spaced 4-8 weeks apart, dependent on the treatment area / location. Not all hairs are in the same phase of hair growth, hence the multiple treatments. At any one time, not all hair follicles are ‘active’, and only active hair follicles can be affected by the treatment. ‘Inactive’ hair follicles can be treated as they become ‘active’ over time.
How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal
Initially you want to make sure to schedule a complimentary consultation prior to scheduling appt. And aesthetician will discuss the treatment process and ensure you are an appropriate candidate. Waxing and tweezing must be stopped 6-8 weeks prior to treatment, because it disrupts the hair growth cycles. But don’t worry, you can continue to shave or begin to shave the area if you haven’t yet done so. In fact, hair must be clean shaven prior to treatment. Also, we are unable to treat tanned skin or skin with self-tanner on them, which is why laser hair removal is much more popular in the fall winter time.
What is the Success Rate of Laser Hair Removal?
We find most patients will have approx. 80% permanent hair reduction. Patients who will see best results tend to have light skin, dark course hair and are consistent with their recommended treatment frequency.
What to Expect During Laser Hair Removal Treatment:
Although there may be some slight temporary discomfort depending on treatment area / amount and density of hair, the treatments are very quick – some areas only take minutes to treat. Larger areas take approx. 30 minutes to treat. Most people find it to be a very tolerable treatment and only feel a momentary “snap” at the treatment site during the procedure. Discomfort will minimize during the treatment process (first treatment might be more uncomfortable, last treatment not as much discomfort). Numbing cream may be applied to certain areas.
What is the Recovery Time After Laser Hair Removal?
No downtime. Normal activities may be resumed. Avoid exfoliating treated areas or using products with AHA or BHA’s and retinols on the treated area (alpha or beta hydroxyl acids). Sunscreen is a must. Some minor swelling may occur. Some patient report the sensation of a minor sunburn for a day or two.
